"Sleeping Beauty Victoria Theatre, Halifax Liz Coggins 5/5
It is not an easy task to give Sleeping Beauty the full pantomime treatment but that’s exactly what the Victoria Theatre have done – and they’ve done it brilliantly.
With no big names, just a cast of versatile and talented performers, who all excel in their roles, this is traditional pantomime at its best. It is fast- moving and visually stunning with beautiful storybook sets, lavish costumes and packed with humour, audience participation, upbeat music plus all the old wellloved pantomime gags.
Josh Benson (Joshin Josh) and Adam Stafford (Nurse Nora) drive the show – this comedy partnership is pure gold. Fast becoming one of the best young comics in pantloand, Benson gets better every year. Entering through the auditorium he leaps on stage with a flip and somersault. Benson has outstanding physical comedy skills, excellent comedy timing boundless energy and what’s more he’s so appealing the kids just love him.
Stafford’s Dame is everything a traditional dame should be – bold, raucous, in your face with lots of belly laughs and some great garish costumes. Master of irreverent repartee, he has the audience in the palm of his hand from his first entrance. Felicity Skiera’s Carabosse becomes the villain you love to hate. She is dramatic, powerful, evil personified with a touch of glamour and a superb singing voice. Becca Lee-Isaacs as Princess Beauty is so believable with her sweet childlike stage persona and teams beautifully with her Prince (Kieran Morris) in the vocals.
To January 2."
